Theme-Pot of Gold (and Flowers) at the End of the Rainbow

Project-Seasonal Greens (broadleaf evergreens and conifers) and florist flowers arranged in a small black pot.

Ed Talk/Activities-Discussed facts about all plant materials used and Irish Legends of fairies especially how the leprechauns steal the pot of gold.  Shared Irish Blessings and sang Irish songs.  Marion House

 

Theme-St. Patrick’s Day

Project-Fresh arrangement featuring Bells of Ireland

Ed Talk/Activities-Characteristics, growth etc. of Bells of Ireland and Italian Arum in particular and all other flowers and greens used.  Layhill Nursing

 

Theme-Early Spring Bouquet

Project-Used Forsythia, mixed daffodils, hellebores.  Greens used were: ilex crenata and pachysandra. Containers were small plastic bowls from Ikea.  Also used oasis.

Ed Talk/Activities-Talked about signs of Spring and the plant materials.Landow House

Project-Did an arrangement in green, gold, and white accented with fun symbols of Ireland (shamrocks, pot of gold).

Theme-St. Patrick’s Day

Project- Arrangement with spring blooming flowers (daffodils, hellebores) and greens (pine needled, acuba, pachysandra, boxwood, lavender) and a pick with an Irish blessing on it.

Ed Talk/Activities-History of St. Patricks Day with shamrocks as symbols of this festive day.  Ask how many residents had Irish ancestors.  Brooke Grove

Project-Green container with glittery shamrocks, rainbows , and leprechaun picks.

Ed Talk/Activities-Discussed Ireland’s climate and bogs, Irish Soda bread, green soda and Irish toasts.  Kensington Nursing

 

Theme-Cherry Blossoms

Project-Planted cherry tree seeds in small containers with soil.  Although the seeds never germinated, the residents loved seeing the pictures and the planting.

Ed Talk/Activities- We discussed different varieties of cherry trees from information given to us by the National Arboretum.  St Bart's/Byron House

 

Theme-Seed Starting

Project-We bring lots of seeds in little origami packets, seed catalogues, seed starting mix, cups, spoons, the small seed starting pods and let the residents go.

Ed Talk/Activities-We talk about how deep to plant, the germination process etc.  We take the prepared seeds home among several of us to water, keep under lights etc., and bring back to plant in May.

Ed Talk/Activities-Discussed an mg’s recent trip to Ireland, the potato famine (used Michael Pollan’s chapter on this from one of his books), Guiness Beer, and the plants and process used in beer making (grade school level of discussion).  Friends House

Ed Talk/Activities-Discussed different kinds of Ivy, read a St. Patricks Day poem and sang Danny Boy.  St Raphael's

Project-Spring green arrangement to include green apples, grapes, and small potatoes.

Project-Holiday themed green and white carnation arrangement in a glass with green foam shamrocks, and clover picks

Ed Talk/Activities-Talked about clover and shamrocks and presented a tray of fresh clover and a shamrock (wood sorrel) plant to show the difference.  Wilson House
