Theme-Begonia Plants for Easter

Project-Potting up begonia plants in an Easter basket

Ed Talk/Activities-Eggs as a symbol of new life, facts about camellia and euphorbia flowers (used in orchid tubes), legends of Easter celebrations (bunny with carrot, jelly beans in plastic eggs, Easter baskets) Marion House

 

Theme-Easter

Project-Easter Basket with flowers, rabbit and eggs.  Used a Doller Tree 4” round “crystal” plastic bowl spray painted gold.  Make handle by laminating gold metallic wrapping paper cut into half inch wide strip hot glued onto bowl.  Filled bowl with flowers, put laminated bunny pick and styrofoam eggs into bowl. 

Ed Talk/Activities-Spring Ephemerals. Brought in daffodils, pussy willow and other spring plants to show the group.  Can cut a bulb in half to show layers.  Layhill Nursing

 

Theme-Geranium plants as indoor or outdoor plants

Ed Talk/Activities-Characteristics of geraniums, many different types available, a few examples of different types shown (live plants), growing conditions for indoor and outdoor and proper care of plants indoors.  Layhill Nursing

 

Theme-Signs of Spring

Projects-Pressed flowers in a picture frame. Frames purchased at the Dollar Store, pressed flowers wee assorted pansies, forsythia, baby’s breath, crocus, button fern, bluettes.  Pastel colored paper used as background and frame.

Project-Arrangement in a beautiful handcrafted (by team member, Emilye Hill), basket for a container, lots of spring foliage and flowers.

Theme-Spring and Easter

Project-Spring flower arrangement with miniature daffodils, grape hyacinths, dandelions, lilac blossoms, flowering cherry blossoms, dried gomphrena blossoms, as well as some artificial flowers and miniature colored eggs in a white container (like yogurt container) with bunny face painted in marker on the front of the container and a cotton ball tail attached to the back of the container and pink and white paper bunny ears set into the flower arrangement.

Ed Talk/Activities-Provided spring pamphlet with photos of spring flowers, spring poems and songs.  Discussion of trees which were bursting into bloom: cherry, redbud, Bradford pear, as well as all the new leaves on maples, oak, hickory etc.  Brooke Grove

 

Theme-Pansies, Ephemeral plants and Easter

Project-Potted live pansy plants in any kind of plastic container deep enough to hold a small plant.  Made decorative picks with seed packets or a copy of seed packets.

Ed Talk/Activities-Talked about what makes a garden grow.  Seeds germinate in warm soil, sprouts require water, light, and warmth and beneficial insects to pollinate the garden.  Display of seed packets and/or pictures of plants and vegetables with their seeds glued on so participants can see and touch seeds.  Kensington Nursing

 

Theme-Terrariums

Project-Residents made Ball jar terrariums with plants, charcoal and soil.  We also placed Easter picks inside.

Ed Talk/Activities-The residents learned about terrariums, using carbon for retaining freshness and moisture, and the different plants that could flourish in this contained environment.  The plants really grew over the months and everyone was delighted with this project. St Barts/Byron House

Theme-Spring Flowers/bulbs

Project- Arrangements with spring bulbs (many varieties of narcissus, some tulips gathered from our yards and some purchased).

Theme-Salad Box/Growing edible greens

Project-Used clementine containers lined with newspaper and filled with soil for planting seeds of different baby salad greens.  Each resident had their own container and they labeled and watered them and sat them outside to grow for the next month.

Ed Talk/Activities-Discussed growing vegetables, especially cool season lettuces. St Raphael's

 

Theme-Rabbit Head Arrangement

Project-Used a can covered in white construction paper with a bunny face on it with a pink foam circular ring set on top as a hat through which an arrangement of daisies and flowers emerge.  Bunny ears on long picks appeared through the flowers.

Theme-April Showers

Project-Fresh flower and fern arrangement with little cocktail umbrellas and other cute spring picks as décor.

Theme-Zen Rock Garden

Project-Created miniature zen rock garden arrangements.

Ed Talk/Activities-Discussed the meaning and use of Zen gardens in Asian Culture.  Friends House

 

Theme-Self-Watering Containers

Project-Containers made from 2 cup and 4 cup deli take-out containers.  Rooted houseplants (pothos), in water or soil.  Just before program rinse soil from roots so participants can see roots.  Each participant gets 1-3 plants to plant in their container. Mark water fill line on side of container.  If plants are left in living area, put either a snowman or scarecrow holding a sign saying “planted by- name of resident”.
