Theme-Celebrating Strawberries

Project-Strawberry Project

Ed Talk/Activities-What makes a true berry (type of fruit)in the botanical sense.  Strawberry is not a true berry but an aggregate fruit (defined).  Examples of true berries given.  Tasted strawberries and cream, read quotes with references to strawberries and played John Denver’s song, Today, which references strawberries (a very soothing song).  MH/LN

 

Theme-Early Summer Flowers

Project-Early summer bouquet arrangement in glass containers (Trader Joe’s Organic Applesauce jars) with water.  Materials included artemisia, fennel foliage, pink and blue hydrangeas, fever few, campanula, larkspur, astilbe, and pink yarrow.

Theme-Flag Day

Project-Arrangement in red ramekin from Dollar Tree with large flag, red and white carnations, lavender and assorted greens.

Theme-You are My Sunshine

Project-Arrangement of flowers including coreopsis, hydrangea and greens with a sunshine pick.

Theme-Roses

Project-Flower arrangement including roses, white and red Yarrow and feverfew, delphiniums, lavender, red bee balm, white and blue hydrangeas, artemisia, lady ferns, Christmas ferns, tassel ferns.

Ed Talk/Activities-Discussed information about roses and read poems on roses.  BRG

 

Theme-Roses

Project-Plastic Perrier bottle or plastic cup with oasis.  Ribbon tied around the bottle.  Used roses, baby’s breath and ferns.

Ed Talk/Activities-Roses, climbing and other types.  Brought samples from our gardens.  KN

 

Theme-Plant Propagation

Project-Planted rosemary cuttings one in water and a second one in soil. Used root grow supplement on the ones planted in soil.

Ed Talk/Activities-Discussed the different ways that plants are propagated.  A month later, several cuttings in water had small roots and the ones in soil started to take root.  STB/BH

 

Theme-Fairy Gardens

Project-Lots of cute little props were added to a planting of mini succulents and “stepables” for landscapes plants.

Theme-Tussie Mussies

Project-Tussie Mussie arrangements.

Ed Talk/Activities-History and meaning of Tussie Mussies and the meaning of flowers used in this project.  BG

 

 

 

Theme-Planting Outdoors

Project-Planting a mostly perennial garden bed along back patio of building.  Residents mostly watched as mg’s planted this bed with donated plants.  They asked questions as we worked.

Ed Talk/Activities-Discussed specific plants used, planting depth, shade vs. sun plants.  Plant care and watering.  STR

 

Theme-Shells

Project-A shell swag and a muffin tin arrangement.

Ed Talk/Activities-Discussed shells, uses for shells, types of shells, and seafood that comes from shelled sea life.  ANN

 

Theme-Baseball

Projects-Arrangement of flowers in a novelty plastic baseball cup from the ballpark (donated/free) with bat and glove picks.

Ed Talk/Activities-Discussed the plants used in making baseball bats baseballs and snacks found at the ball park.  WH
