August Projects

 

Theme-Butterflies

Project-An arrangement made with flowers that butterflies visited from the TH beds at Derwood.  Assorted laminated butterfly picks were added for interest and to support the theme.

Ed Talk/Activities-Discussed the importance of butterflies as pollinators, the lifecycle of butterflies, efforts to create sustainable butterfly habitats (as reported in the Maryland Natural Resource publication, Summer 2017), and poems and quotes about butterflies including this Irish blessing:

May the wings of the butterfly kiss the Sun,

And find your shoulder to light on,

To bring you luck and happiness,

Today, tomorrow and beyond           MH/LN

 

Theme-Late Summer Bouquets

Project-Arrangement in glasses from the Dollar Store.  Lined the glasses with leaves.  Used red and pink gomphrena, fennel flowers, artemisia, verbena, lavender, hibiscus syracus (rose of Sharon), zinnias, heliopsis, victrix tree blooms and mint greens.

Ed Talk/Activities-Discussed plant materials.  LH

 

Theme-Importance of Bees in the Food Chain

Project-Arrangement using black mushroom containers adorned with bee stickers, lots of summer flowers especially yellow and white and the usual greens.  Highlighted with handcrafted bees created by team member Cynthia Kaufman.

Theme-Maryland, My Maryland

Project-Container with copy of the state flag covering it.  Used black eyed Susans and other flowers from the TH beds at Derwood.

Ed Talk/Activities-Discussed the state tree, bird, butterfly and flower.  We shared plastic covered card examples of each of those.  HC

 

Theme-Summer and the Seashore

Project-Floral arrangement including pachysandra, black eyed Susans, butterfly bush, crepe myrtle, Queen Anne’s lace, northern sea oats, and featuring various types, sizes and shapes of seashells as well as miniature umbrellas.

Ed Talk/Activities-Discussed gardening in August.  Talked about memories associated with summer trips to the beach and lakes and which were their favorite foods of summer.  Gave out goldfish crackers as a snack.  BRG

 

Theme-Maryland, My Maryland

Project-Red plastic sup or can covered with Maryland flag filled with rudbeckia, and other flowers.  Picks used were: a crab painted in a Maryland flag design, Maryland flag picks and picks with Maryland plant and animal mascots.

Ed Talk/Activities-Discuss large pictures of the Baltimore Oriole, white oak, checkerspot, blue crab, and other Maryland symbols and also discussed meaning of endangered species.  KN

 

Theme-The Maryland State Flower

Project-Made an arrangement with black eyed Susans in a decorative container.

Ed Talk/Activities-Talked about different varieties of black eyed Susans and showed a five foot long stem and flower.  STB/BH

 

 

 

Theme-Flower Arranging

Project-Flower arrangements using different containers and styles.

Ed Talk/Activities-Discussed specific flower arranging tips, container shapes, oasis vs. frogs or scotch tape to hold flowers in place.   BG

 

Theme-Maryland State Flower

Project-Cupcake flower arrangements featuring black eyed Susans  and other tiny cut summer annuals and perennials in a variety of colored silicone cupcake cups filed with oasis. Residents made more than one of these. Even though it required lots of attention and dexterity, they loved it and how the little arrangements looked.

Ed Talk/Activities-Talked about black eyed Susans and sang summer songs.  BG

Theme-Moon Gardens

Project-A moon garden arrangement with all white, silver, and muted greens.

Theme-Tall Plants of Summer

Project-Made dried corn husk sunflowers in advance and added them to a late summer flower arrangement in a double clear container (bowl within a bowl) style holder with various colored beans in between the container layers.  Also used ribbon around the flowers.

Ed Talk/Activities-Discussed tall summer plants and used a life size scaled cardboard prop of a 6 foot+ tall sunflower plant to demonstrate the heights of a variety of tall summer plants.  Used a clothespin to attach examples of each tall plant to the side of this cardboard sunflower to show the plants in ascending order from tall to tallest.   WH
