Theme-Straw and Hay

Project- Group project was filling the arms and legs of a life size scarecrow that was made in advance, but with the lower arms and legs unfilled so that the residents could finish stuffing them with straw from big piles of straw that each was given. Individual project was making a fall farm scene diorama in a black take out container with a fall ribbon glued around it.  The items used were mini-scarecrows on picks, a tiny metal bucket (found online) filled by the residents with fall flowers and greens, and a mini pumpkin along with a background of cut greens to look like trees and dried plant material stuck in for a fall-like affect.  Used a strip of oasis to hold up the scarecrow and background items and covered the whole bottom with straw giving it a farm feeling.

Ed Talk/Activities-Discussed straw and hay and the differences between them, what they are both used for and then focused on hayrides.  Talked about the traditions of hayrides and the singing on them which is part of that Americana tradition.  Sang songs found online to be associated with those sung on hayrides. Had residents discuss memories of going on hayrides.  Served cider and donuts.  STB/BH
