Flowers and their meanings

We made posies using flowers with special meaning:

  • hydrangeas - gratitude
  • zinnias  - remembrance
  • lavender - devotion
  • sage - wisdom
  • basil  - love
  • rosemary - remembrance
  • sunflower
  • artemisia - star
  • daisy - innocence
  • ivy - fidelity, friendship
  • gomphrena - affection

Theme-Fourth of July

Project-Red, white and blue stars were included in a flower arrangement

Ed Talk/Activities-Discussed how flowers are used to celebrate many “special times” and how colors carry out a theme.  Recited the pledge of Allegiance and sung patriotic songs.  LN

 

Theme-Sun and Flowers

Project-Arrangement of summer flowers in a green pot.

Ed Talk/Activities-Discussed photosynthesis and the role and benefits of sunlight.  Talked about facts about each of the sun loving and heat tolerant flowers and greens used.  Sang You are my Sunshine and In the Good Old Summertime.  MH

 

Theme-Mid-Summer Flowers

Project-Arrangement in oasis floral foam in blue plastic bowls from the Dollar Store.  Plant materials included Bells of Ireland, blue hydrangea, pink, yellow and white zinnias, artemisia, white yarrow, white daisies, purple Angelonia, verbena, pachysandra, and andromeda greens.

Ed Talk/Activities-Discussed the plant materials used.  LH

 

Theme-Summer Is Here

Project-Arrangement that took advantage of all of the flowers blooming at this time of year including white daisies, liatris, zinnias, and assorted greens.

Theme-Fourth of July

Project-Used attractive metal cups for an arrangement of red carnations and picks.  Added white yarrow and anise hyssop from the demo garden.  American flags on picks and filer greens added to bouquets 

Ed Talk/Activities-Talked about the holiday and the flowers.  Served watermelon and sang patriotic songs.  HC

 

Theme-Butterflies

Project-Floral arrangement in clear glass bottle with butterfly printed tape on the front of the bottle, 3D butterfly stickers, used greens (pachysandra, mint asparagus fern), and flowers (butterfly bush, zinnias, artemisia, black eyed susan, orange cosmos).

Ed Talk/Activities-Pictorial of butterflies, education information on butterflies and the flowers they like for nectar as well as the flowers they need as host plants.  BRG

 

Theme-Flag Day and Fourth of July

Project-Small blue container with a white bow.  Used red and white flowers (maybe daisies, roses, national flower?), American flag picks and ”fireworks” decorative shoots.

Ed Talk/Activities-Holiday traditions.   KN

 

Theme-In the Good Old Summertime

Project-A miniature flower arrangement with a berry theme accenting berries with a bit of fourth of July Patriotism with flag picks.

Ed Talk/Activities-Talked about the holiday, summertime, sang several songs that evoked their youth in the summertime and ate a strawberry shortcake treat.  STB/BH

 

 

 

 

 

Theme-Herbs/Lemonade

Project-Residents squeezed lemons and added various simple syrups made with specific herbs (made ahead of time by mg’s).  Tasting and judging of herbs and smelling of fresh herbs followed.

Ed Talk/Activities-Discussed various uses of herbs.  Read poetry and told historic anecdotes about the herbs that the residents really enjoyed. BG

 

Theme-A Spice of Life

Project-An Arrangement of many herbs and some flowers.

Ed Talk/Activities-Fully discussed all the different herbs in the mint family and a few other herbs with crushing and smelling of each by the residents.  Gave an herb quiz on paper that residents had to fill out on their own (however shakily) including taping or pasting down the correct herb sample next to its description.  STR

 

Theme-Wizard of Oz

Project-Flower arrangement movie themed picks

Ed Talk/Activities-Talked about the movie with costumes and songs.  AAL

 

Theme-Bees and Pollinators

Project- Flower Arrangement in a glass punch cup with big beehive and bumblebee picks.

Ed Talk/Activities-All about bees and pollinators.  WH
