Theme-Fresh Greens used at Christmastime

Project-Broadleaf and needled evergreens and pinecones arranged in a Christmas mug.

Ed Talk/Activities-Discussed distinction between broadleaf and needled evergreens in the winter landscape and their mechanisms with coping with winter temperatures.  Talked about the definition of conifers (often referred to as evergreens).  Discussed cones as the seed bearers of conifers.  Showed examples of different cones.  MH/LN

 

Theme-Hanukkah

Project-A bouquet consistent with Hanukkah colors (cobalt blue grasses), flowers included pittisporum, rosemary, waxed flowers, rose alstromeria, and purple and white alstromeria.

Project-Used holiday themed mugs for the container with an assortment of conifers, greens with berries, red and white purchased flowers and evergreens

Theme-Winter Greens

Project-Used a mug with winter greens and berry arrangement including pachysandra, cedar, pine, pieris Japonica, juniper, boxwood, and real and artificial berries (nandina and holly), fern fronds pained red, gold and silver, hydrangea painted red, blue, orange and silver, foxtail weed seed heads painted red.

Ed Talk/Activities-Discussed evergreens and their ability to hold water in their leaves and needles in the winter as well as how they maintain their leaves over the cold winter months.  BRG

Project-Red mug, plastic cup or small bowl with oasis and picks with pinecones, red bows, candles or ornaments.

Project-Made topiaries with greens and small bling, tiny roses and bows.

Project-Made holiday wreath with birds.

Theme-Snowman in Winter Scene

Project-White spray painted small plastic container filled with oasis glued onto small 5” clear plastic plate.  Cover the oasis with foil.  Made a snowman out of two large dried marshmallows with face and buttons painted in with black marker.  Made nose from orange toothpick piece.  Hat (that looks like straw hat) made from a top of a sawtooth oak acorn cap.  Arms made of tiny evergreen branches.  Use clear glue on flat surfaces and add fake snowflakes to cover. Use various evergreens and red nandina leaves/berries to create winter background scene with a red plastic tiny cardinal on one branch.
